Several measures have been taken by the government to augment and upgrade the sports infrastructure in the state, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said today.

"We have already undertaken a comprehensive programme for augmenting the sports infrastructure in rural as well as urban areas," Singh said while interacting with participants of the 8th Sambo National Championship held in Bihar.

With six gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals, the Jammu and Kashmir team was the runner-up in the seven-day championship which concluded early this month.

Players of the team are slated to participate in trials for the Asian Sambo Championship to be held next year.

Congratulating the players and the association members, Singh said mega sports tournaments are being organised in the state regularly to groom local talents.

"These events provide the requisite exposure to the budding talents and instill spirit and confidence in them," he said.

He said every possible support would be provided to Sambo so that more children and youth start playing the game.

The deputy chief minister said the youth of the state have already made their mark at national and international events and the need of the hour is to provide them more opportunities.
