Severe heat wave continued to disrupt normal life across Odisha today even as the mercury declined slightly in the western parts of the state.
The number of alleged sun stroke deaths increased to 112, though the State government confirmed the death of only eight persons due to heat-related incidents, a report from Special Relief Commissioner's office said.
A bulletin issued by the IMD said the heat wave conditioncontinuedtoprevailatafewplacesoverinterior Odisha."MaximumtemperaturessawnolargechangeoverOdisha. TheywereappreciablyabovenormaloverinteriorOdishaand normaloverCoastalOdisha," the bulletin said.
Heatwave condition was likely to prevail at a few places over interior Odisha for the next 48 hours, it said.
Western Odisha, sizzling in the gruelling heat for over 10 days, had some respite as the mercury level dropped by two to three degrees Celsius. Sonepur, however, recorded a high of 46.3 degrees Celsius as the temperature there went down by a mere .2 degrees since yesterday, according to the Meteorological Centre here.
Titlagarh, which had became the hottest place in the country and recorded 48.5 degree C on Sunday, was at 45.5 degree C yesterday and 42 degree C today. Similarly, Bolangir which recorded 46 degree C yesterday experienced heat of 42.7 degree C during the day following rainfall of about 20 mm during the past 24 hours, the weatherman said.
Bhawanipatna recorded a maximum temperature of 42 degree C against yesterday's 45.2 deg C and Sambalpur was 43.9 degree C down from 45 degrees C yesterday.
The mercury level fell from 44.6 deg C yesterday to 43.3 degree C in Hirakud and 43.8 degree C at Jharsuguda from 44.5 degree C yesterday, the weatherman said.
The heat, however, increased in the coastal belt including in Bhubaneswar where the temperature shot up to 42.8 degrees Celsius from 38.9 degrees C yesterday with relative humidity at 89 per cent.
In neighbouring Cuttack the temperature increased to 40.4 degree Celsius, In Chandbali to 42.6 degrees C, in Angul to 44.7 degrees C, in Baripada to 42 degrees C, in Keonjhar to 42.7 degrees C, while it was 45 degrees at Talcher, 40.8 degrees at Phulbani and 43 degrees at Dhenkanal, the Met office said.
Three persons died of heat related incidents in Angul district, two persons died in Dhenkanal and one person each succumbed to sunstroke in Bolangir, Balasore and Jajpur districts, SRC officials said.
