Union minster Uma Bharti today proposed penal action against officials for incidents resulting in the deaths of sanitation workers while cleaning sewers.
Addressing a gathering in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the third anniversary of the Clean India campaign, she said the official in-charge of the area concerned should be held responsible to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
The Drinking Water and Sanitation minister said there should also be a penal provision in place to punish the guilty.
In Delhi alone, at least 10 sanitation workers have died while cleaning sewers. These workers have either died of suffocation or after inhaling poisonous gases.
