A 68-year old man was arrested here today for cheating five youths by promising to get them jobs abroad and collecting Rs eight lakh for the same, police said.

Based on a complaint by the youths, the City Crime Branch police investigated the matter and took Venkatachalam of Kovaipudur into custody.

Interrogation revealed that the man had taken Rs 1.60 lakh from each of them and failed to provide job as promised, police said.

Venkatachalam was introduced to the youths by a woman in Tiruchirapalli, claiming that the person had worked in Singapore and knew a travel agency in Chennai, they added.

Since he threatened them whenever they enquired about the job or sought refund of the money, the youths preferred a complaint with the Crime Branch here and sought stringent action against the woman also, police said.

After interrogation, Venkatachalam, against whom three cases were pending in different police stations in the city, was arrested and lodged in the Central jail, police said.
