BJP President Amit Shah today offered prayers at the famous Lord Nataraja temple here where he was given a traditional welcome with full temple honours.

He also worshipped at the Sri Govindarajaswamy sub-temple, part of the ancient Lord Shiva shrine.

The BJP President was received with full temple hours by the deekshadhars (traditional high priests).

He spent 20 minutes standing near the sanctum sanctorium and a special abishekam and archana were performed.

The priests gave a detailed account about history of the 11th century temple where Lord Nataraja, according to legends, performed the cosmic dance.

Union Minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan and BJP state leader Tamizhisai Soundararajan also accompanied Shah, who spent about one hour in the temple.

Police made elaborate security arrangements at the temple for the visit of the BJP leader, which was not disclosed earlier.
