All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Shakeel Ahmad and party's state unit chief Partap Singh Bajwa today joined the relay hunger strike, demanding a CBI inquiry into the multi-crore drug scam.

Dina Nagar MLA Aruna Chaudhary and Gurmeet Singh Pahda from Gurdaspur led party workers on the relay fast at the Punjab Congress Bhawan here, a party spokesman said.

Addressing party workers, Ahmad said AICC had extended full support to Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in its agitation for a CBI inquiry into the drug scam.

Ahmad said he was of the view that the state police would not be able to probe the case of drug trafficking, in which smugglers from several states and countries were involved.

He accused the SAD-BJP government in Punjab of shielding the drug traffickers, and said it was rather serious that some of the ministers were also named in it.

He said it was moral duty of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to hand over the investigation to CBI to clear the allegations against his ministers. He said drugs were being supplied from Punjab to all over the country.

The Congress leader said if Akali leaders had no role in the drug racket, they would get clean chit from the CBI or another agency like the Narcotics Control Bureau, if they were allowed to probe the matter.

Punjab Congress president Bajwa claimed that the Chief Minister was scared of a CBI probe as names of his family members might crop up during investigation. He said whatever Punjab Police had exposed so far was only tip of the iceberg.

The drug racket has many layers and many more traffickers who are still operating in the state, he said.
