About 122 surveillance cameras have been installed in all coaches of Shan-e-Punjab Express as Railways seeks to strengthen security of passengers particularly women travellers.

With this the Amritsar-bound train has become the first to have CCTV facility in the entire train.

The guard's compartment of the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-e-Punjab Express will have a LCD screen for monitoring CCTV footage in the women's coach for prompt action.

Surveillance cameras have been installed in such a way that it will not compromise the privacy of passengers but it will act as deterrent against crime, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The CCTVs have been installed strategically at all doors and the corridor in the coaches, at an estimated cost of Rs 36 lakh.

Footage is being recorded on a portable device with a storage capacity of one month and can be retrieved by security personnel whenever required.

Three coaches in a Mumbai suburban train have also been equipped with CCTV cameras on a pilot basis.

Railways aims to equip more trains with such facilities to prevent crime against women and reduce thefts and other such incidents in trains.
