Former Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Yadav today announced he would support the ruling Congress in poll-bound Karnataka, saying he was doing so to defeat BJP.

Yadav, a rebel JD(U) leader, said the faction represented by him has influence on a few seats in the state, but his faction has decided to not put up candidates in the May 12 assembly polls after the Congress expressed reluctance to part with any seat for it.

"The Congress could not accommodate our party and our workers agreed that in order to defeat BJP we should not compel it for parting with seats, and instead we should work for it in the elections," he said in a statement.

Yadav claimed Congress has an edge over BJP in the state.

The deadline for entering the fray for the polls ended today.
