Shia cleric denied entry to club, UP Governor seeks explanation

The Governor has termed it objectionable and unfortunate while seeking details about the incident

Prominent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq was allegedly denied entry to Mahomed Bagh (MB) here for not following dress code, prompting UP Governor Ram Naik to seek an explanation from the club authorities today.

"A letter has been sent to Secretary of MB Club seeking his explanation within 24 hours. The Governor also sought to know about the dress code rules of the club," a Rajbhawan release said.

The Governor has termed it "objectionable" and "unfortunate" while seeking details about the incident, it said.

Maulana Sadiq, who was invited for a programme in MB Club yesterday, was allegedly denied entry as he was in traditional attire.
 
Sadiq, Vice President of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and the club authorities were not available for comment.

"The dress code of MB Club imbibed from British years continues. Kurtas, jeans, collarless T-shirts are not permitted," the club website says.

The club being on a defence laud, the GOC-in-C, Central Command, Lucknow, is the Patron.

Chairmanship of the club rotates between the Chief of Staff, Central Command and the Chief Secretary, UP government on yearly basis, as per the provisions in the club rules.
