Shipping Ministry to develop Cuddalore port: TN Minister

The Ministry of Shipping has identified Cuddalore Port as a dedicated minor port in Tamil Nadu, State Minister for Highways and Minor Ports 'Edappadi' K Palaniswami said today.

The move by shipping ministry comes against the backdrop of the state government's proposal to develop Cuddalore port.

"Recently, the Ministry of Shipping, has identified Cuddalore Port as dedicated minor port in Tamil Nadu for providing monetary incentives, with a view to encourage coastal transport for cargo," Palaniswami said at the Sagarmala Apex Committee meeting in New Delhi.

Stating that Tamil Nadu Maritime Board was taking steps to increase the capacity addition in the minor ports in the state he said, "the state government was keen on developing World Class Ports as it will create large employment opportunities in the coastal districts".
 

He said the government has sent proposals to the Shipping Ministry for installing buoys at Pamban Channel, proposal for development of Kanyakumari Port and for development of roads leading to non-major ports.

He requested the Centre to allocate funds for projects taken up during the current financial year ensuring timely development of such projects.
