Press Trust of India Mangaluru
: The closure of Shiradi Ghat stretch of Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway for repair work has resulted in chaos with traffic jams in diversion routes.

The Dakshina Kannada (DK) district administration had blocked vehicular movement in the stretch from 6 AM yesterday after announcing alternative roads to be used by commuters.

Official sources said the administration and police would take adequate measures to check violation of rules by vehicles during the repair work.

With closure of the Shiradi Ghat road, the diversion route through Charmadi Ghat was blocked for hours on the very first day itself. Passengers in buses and other vehicles had to spend the night in the middle of the Ghat.

The administration had allowed KSRTC vehicles and light vehicles to ply via Charmadi Ghat. Since two vehicles cannot proceed at a time in opposite directions in the narrow road, long queues of vehicles were seen on either direction up to 30 km, sources said.

The Shiradi Ghat starts from the Garadi Chamundeshwari temple in the border of Dakshina Kannada and Hassan districts. The Ghat section of Western Ghats through which the NH-75 passes is called Shiradi Ghat.
