The Station House Officer (SHO) of Pothia police station in Kishanganj district has been suspended for his failure to maintain law and order situation, a senior district police officer said today.

A mob had yesterday torched Pothia police station following rumour that a tribal person died due to alleged police torture.

Vijay Kumar would be the new SHO of the police station, Superintendent of Police Rajiv Mishra said.

The SP today constituted a four member committee to assess the damage caused by the mob during arson at the police station.

Mishra said that a four member committee has been set up under Assistant Superintendent of Police to carry out the assessment of the damage.

Stern action would be taken against those who indulged in attack and arson at the Pothia police station, Mishra said.

Three rifles and more than 100 cartridges have been destroyed in the fire, the SP said adding that one loaded pistol and 264 cartridges are missing since the incident.

Besides the miscreants have also taken away cash by breaking open the trunk of the police station.

A mob of armed tribals had yesterday torched Pothia police station following rumour that a tribal person Raju Hansda died due to alleged police torture during interrogation.

The mob had also torched two jeeps belonging to Pothia police station, an MUV, three motorcycles and a large number of files.

Raju Hansda was arrested three days ago while he was taking liquor. He was hospitalised after his health condition deteriorated during interrogation.

However, some people spread a rumour that Hansda was allegedly tortured by the police during interrogation and died, enraging the tribals who resorted to arson and attacked the police station.

The tribals later calmed down after hearing the voice of Hansda on mike on Saturday night, SP said adding that situation is now under control.
