Delhi police today suspended the Station House Officer of Vivek Vihar police station for allegedly beating up a journalist in east Delhi's Trilokpuri area around a week ago.

"The SHO, Vivek Sangwan, has been suspended pending enquiry and the role of other officers will also be probed in this connection," said a senior police official.

The incident had taken place when journalist Rajesh Saroha, who works with a leading Hindi daily, had gone to Block No. 11 of the locality to cover the clashes that had broken out in the area.

Sangwan along with his subordinates had allegedly thrashed Saroha with sticks despite being told that he was a journalist.

The incident had prompted journalists to stage a protest at Delhi Police Headquarters following which Police Commissioner B S Bassi had assured them of strong action.
