A Libyan security official says that a disgruntled officer in uniform opened fire at the front gates of the Libyan prime minister's office in the heart of Tripoli. No one was injured.

The official says that the man parked his car in front of the building today, destroyed a placard with the building's name emblazoned on it, then headed back to his car and snatched his rifle to open fire on the front gates. The official says civilians arrested the man and handed him over to the building's guards.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to journalists.

Libya has suffered from rampant insecurity since the downfall and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
