: Protesting against a private gas company setting up a godown in a residential area, shops and other commercial establishments downed shutters today at Avanashi in nearby Tirupur district.
Police said residents, political parties and members of the public had raised objections to setting up the godown some six months ago, based on which the local administration cancelled permission to set it up.
Despite this the company opened the godown, even as some residents blocked a lorry containing gas cylinders last evening, they said.
Meanwhile, a section of agitators sought action against a senior police official, for allegedly terming some protesters as Naxalites and Terrorists.
