Shortage of doctors and nurses appeared to have hit healthcare services at the sub-divisional hospital of Jeypore in this district.

The skeletal staff is working overtime to attend to the patients as there are four medical specialists against the sanctioned strength of 15, officials said.

While posts in orthopaedic, anaesthesia, medicine, ENT, skin, surgery and paediatric departments are lying vacant, there are only 16 nurses against the requirement of 30, they said.

People of five blocks and two municipal areas depend on this hospital. It receives around 250 patients daily. Besides doctors, the hospital does not have adequate facilities such as toilets.

Sub-divisional Medical Officer (Jeypore) D B Tripathy admitted to the shortage of doctors in the hospital and said the staff often have to work overtime.

"We have informed our higher-ups about the problem, but to no avail. We are trying to run the hospital with the available resources. The staff work overtime to attend to patients," Tripathy said.
