An elderly couple from Bangalore allegedly attempted to commit suicide today by drowning in the sea off nearby Mandapam coast in despondency over indifference of their children, but were saved by fishermen.

Police said 61-year old Muthappa and his wife Lakshmi (58) inflicted cut injuries all over their bodies by using a shaving blade and then jumped into the sea.

However, fishermen in the vicinity rescued them and admitted them to a government hospital here.

The couple, who were frustrated with life, said they had offered 30 sovereigns of gold jewels which they were wearing to the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple by putting them in the hundi before deciding to commit suicide together.

Their condition was stable and their relatives had been informed, police added.
