A BJP member today demanded in Lok Sabha the closure of slaughter houses in Uttar Pradesh, arguing that they were polluting the Lon river.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Sakshi Maharaj (BJP) said tanneries and slaughter houses in Unnao district of the state are responsible for pollution of the Lon river.

He said often the situation worsens with rainfall as polluted water blocks the road and enters the residences.

The government is working on plans to clean Ganga river, Maharaj noted, adding some attention should also be paid towards cleaning other rivers also.

"I would request the central government to send a team to Unnao for assessing the situation and ensuring immediate cleaning of the river," he said.

He also demanded that all the tanneries should be asked to install water treatment plants.
