Shyamal Kumar Sarkar takes over as new DoPT secretary

Senior IAS officer Syamal Kumar Sarkar today took over as new Secretary in Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

Sarkar, a 1979-batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre, has replaced P K Mishra (1976-batch IAS officer of UP cadre), who retired yesterday.

Sarkar was Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, before taking over his new assignment. He has earlier served as Additional Secretary in the DoPT and at various positions in his state cadre--West Bengal.

59-year-old Sarkar will have a tenure of little over an year.

He will be responsible for crucial government decisions on various matters related to transparency in governance and on the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
 

Another officer Gauri Kumar has taken over as first woman Secretary (Border Management) in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Kumar is a 1979-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. She was working as Special Secretary in Ministry of Mines before taking over her new assignment.

She has earlier served as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF), Director General of National Institute of Fashion Technology under the Ministry of Textiles and in various other positions.
