A sub-inspector who was arrested in a case of gangrape of a minor girl was today placed under suspension here.
Superintendent of Police Durai placed SI Shankar, who was arrested on October 7, under suspension.
The action followed a directive by the Madras High Court bench at Madurai on a petition filed by an advocate seeking a CBI probe into the alleged gangrape of the 17-year-old girl. The 55-year-old policeman was among the accused in the case, in which the court had directed police to file an Action Taken Report.

The advocate had referred to a police complaint by a woman from Coimbatore against "atrocities" against her 17-year -old niece by some persons, including her father and brother, and said that a cursory perusal of the FIR showed that police had not registered the complaint as preferred by the victim, "but tailored it to suit their dubious intentions".
The petitioner had alleged that police had forced the woman to file a complaint charging only the father and brother with raping the girl, omitting any allegations against others.
He had also submitted that the girl had undergone forced abortion many times.
Besides the SI, five persons had been arrested so far in the case and searches are on to nab the others.
