The bandh was total with shops and business establishments remaining closed across the district and vehicular traffic keeping was off the roads, official sources said.
No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the district.
The bandh was called jointly by Mising Students' Union, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, All Tai Ahom Students' Union and some other outfits demanding immediate action against Army personnel responsible for the alleged molestation of a girl at Demow in Sibsagar district on July 13.
The bandh supporters also demanded that the guilty Army personnel be handed over to the police.
"While the entire national media is focussing on the molestation of a girl in Guwahati, nobody has bothered to report about the incident in Demow because the place is a back-water and the girl is from a poor family," they said.
The girl was allegedly molested when she went to collect fire wood in a flooded area. Her cries drew the attention of the villagers, who freed the girl and lodged a complaint with the local police.
Following it, one of the Army personnel was arrested but he is in Army custody.
