A group of local BJP leaders has launched a signature campaign demanding that party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi should fight the Lok Sabha polls from here.

The campaign comes in the backdrop of reports that BJP might field Modi from here, replacing current MP Murli Manohar Joshi.

The campaign by the group named 'Modi Army' began yesterday from the Godowalia area, city president of the group and a local BJP leader Dharmendra Gupta said.

Under the campaign, locals have been asked to sign in support of the demand for Modi to contest from here.

A target of five lakh signatures has been set. The signatures will be sent to the national leadership, requesting them to consider Modi's candidature from the Varanasi seat, Gupta said.
