The Sikh Congressional Caucus has written a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, expressing concern over the recent desecration of Sikh holy book and the subsequent violence against protesters in Punjab.

"We are greatly concerned at these events," wrote two Caucus Co-Chairs Congressmen Patrick Meehan and John Garamendi in their letter to Kerry that is dated October 30.

"The Constitution of both India and the United States guarantee citizens the right to assemble and the right to free speech. We believe the sacred scriptures of all religions should be respected," they said.

"We encourage you to be an advocate for religious freedom and the ability of those in India and around the world to practice their religion free from violence," Meehan and Garamendi wrote in their letter to Kerry.
