Sikh groups today took out a march to the Akal Takht in the Golden Temple complex, demanding the release of Jagtar Singh Hawara.

Hawara, the convict in the Beant Singh assassination case, was appointed the Jathedar of the Akal Takht by several Sikh outfits and hardline groups at Sarbat Khalsa, a grand assembly of Sikhs, held at Chabba on November 10.

He is currently undergoing a life-term in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

The protestors, led by Karnail Singh Peermohammad, President of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), displayed placards that read "Free Jathedar Hawara".

Peermohammad said, "Inspired by the call given by Jathedar Hawara, we will install cameras in gurdwaras in rural areas and designate 'Panthic Pehredars' to unearth the conspiracy behind the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib."

The idea of installing CCTV cameras was put forth by US- based human rights group "Sikhs for Justice" (SFJ) and supported by Damdami Taksal, Shiromani Sant Khalsa International Foundation, Sikh Sangarsh Committee, Sikh Chetna Manch and All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), he added.
