Silver prices surged Rs 161 at Rs 34,366 per kg in futures trade today as speculators widened positions amid a firming trend overseas.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in far-month March next year rose by Rs 161, or 0.47%, to Rs 34,366 per kg in a business turnover of 238 lots.

On similar lines, the white metal for delivery in December was trading higher by Rs 103, or 0.31%, at Rs 33,583 per kg with a business volume of 42 lots.

Speculators widened positions, tracking a firming trend overseas as investors await more cues from the US including interest rates and the November jobs report later this week, supported the upside in silver futures here, marketmen said.

In Singapore, silver climbed 0.75% to $14.16 an ounce today.
