Tracking a firming trend in the precious metals overseas, silver prices soared by Rs 249 to Rs 42,300 per kg in futures trade today as speculators widened their bets.

In futures trading at the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in December shot up by Rs 249 or 0.59 per cent to Rs 42,300 per kg in a business turnover of 1,187 lots.

The white metal for delivery in March next year contracts too was trading higher by Rs 222 or 0.52 per cent to Rs 43,201 per kg in 29 lots.

Market analysts said speculative position created by participants, driven by firm global trend, supported the upside in silver prices in futures trade here.

Meanwhile, silver climbed 0.83 per cent to USD 17.59 an ounce in Singapore.
