Taking positive cues from the global market, silver prices edged higher by 0.33 per cent to Rs 40,389 per kg in futures trade today as speculators built up fresh positions.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in September rose by Rs 132, or 0.33 per cent, to Rs 40,389 per kg, in a business turnover of one lot.

Likewise, the white metal for delivery in July traded higher by Rs 73, or 0.18 per cent, to Rs 39,905 per kg in 1,393 lots.

Market analysts said fresh positions created by traders on the back of a firm trend overseas, mainly attributed the rise in silver prices at futures trade.

Globally, silver rose 0.97 per cent to USD 17.22 an ounce in New York in yesterday's trade.
