Taking positive cues from global market, silver prices shot up by 0.64 per cent to Rs 34,169 per kg in futures trade today as participants widened positions.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in far-month May jumped by Rs 218, or 0.64 per cent, to Rs 34,169 per kg in a business turnover of 122 lots.

On similar lines, the white metal for delivery in March traded higher by Rs 171, or 0.51 per cent, to Rs 33,704 per kg in 8,482 lots.

Analysts said widening of positions by speculators, triggered by a firming trend overseas and rising demand at domestic spot markets, mainly led to the rise in silver prices at futures trade here.

Globally, silver rose 0.79 per cent to USD 13.96 an ounce in London.
