Sirajul Haq, a hardliner politician from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, was today elected as the new chief of Pakistan's right-wing party Jamaat-e-Islami.

Haq defeated sitting chief Syed Munawar Hasan who had recently courted a controversy after he termed the dead Taliban militants as martyrs.

He is a strong proponent of the talks with Taliban.

Haq was elected as a member of the provincial assembly in 2002. He was again elected MPA in the last year elections and is currently a senior Minister in the provincial government with Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
