BJP today said it was necessary to initiate an SIT probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi, as the then Congress government had failed to take police and military action to check the "brutal massacre."
"Practically it (1984 anti-Sikh riots) was a genocide and there was no police and military intervention. There was no firing. Nobody died in police firing which means the ruling Congress party at the centre did not act (to prevent the massacre of Sikhs)," BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters on the sidelines of candle march on the occasion of Martyrs Day here.
Naidu said Narendra Modi government, on the other hand, swung into action to take police and military action after Gujarat riots broke out.
"They (Congress) take the name of Gujarat where there was police firing. More than 200 people died in the firing. That means the government has acted. The Delhi government had not acted," he said.
Moreover, Naidu said, the then Congress government had justified anti-Sikh riots when Rajiv Gandhi said "when a big tree falls, the earth shakes."
"Therefore, it is necessary to initiate SIT probe into the riots," he said.
The SIT probe should be initiated because the Congress had not completed any probe initiated by various enquiry commissions in the past, Naidu said.
He welcomed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's demand for SIT probe.
