The Union Science and Technology Ministry is in the process of constituting the committee that could help put in place safety measures in and around Sivakasi, India's fireworks capital.

Sources said the decision was taken after such a demand was made by Congress MP Manicka Tagore, who represents Virudhunagar, under which Sivakasi falls, in Lok Sabha.

The factories in Sivakasi in southern Tamil Nadu manufacture almost 99 per cent of fire crackers in the country and most of them are short of safety standards set by the government.

Om Shakti Fire Works, the factory which was reduced to a rubble after last week's inferno, was asked to shut down its operations following an inspection by government authorities a day before the tragedy took place.

The committee would interact with people and suggest some kind of technology that could be used in manufacturing of such crackers and thereby preventing incidents of last week's nature.

Since over 2 lakh people eke out their living by working in such factories, the government feels only technology could help it prevent such incidents.
