Six persons accused of raping a 35-year-old woman in the city last year, have been acquitted by a local court.

Additional District Judge Sayeeda Bano Rahman acquitted all the six accused in the case yesterday, due to contradictory statements made by the survivor, supposed to be an illiterate woman.

The alleged offence took place on the night of April 24 last year, near Nishatpura railway coach factory, when the woman along with her husband was heading home on a bicycle.

The six accused - Sanjay, Vikram, Shekhar, Deendayal, Shubham and Murli - apprehended the couple and took them to a nearby place where they took turns to rape her, while they pinned down her husband, police sources said.

The accused also robbed the couple's mobile phone.

Later, all the six were arrested and booked for rape and dacoity.
