Six members of a gang, accused of luring passengers at Hazrat Nizammudin Railway Station here for a cheap auto ride before escaping with their valuables including jewellery, have been arrested, police said today.
The members along with the leader of the 'Dhol Baaz' gang, which were arrested earlier this week, would mostly target the passengers who had hired porters at the railway station, said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (Crime).
"On November 21, the gang had duped a lady of jewellery articles worth Rs 5 lakh and cash. One of the gang members, Devender, posing as an auto rickshaw driver with Mashkoor and Vicky Choudhary posing as passengers, approached the lady, who was looking for an auto.
"They told her that since they were also going to the same destination, they would charge only one third of the total fare," said the officer.
They lured her by offering a cheap auto ride and then a fourth passenger boarded the auto and diverted the attention of the victim from her bag, said another officer, adding that they opened her bag with their instruments and escaped with all her jewellery and cash.
The 'Dhol Baaz' gang, which earned the moniker because of its usage of word 'Dhol' for master keys used to open the luggae, did not have a fixed modus operandi and employed different tricks, the official said.
"They used to identify their victims. Those who were carrying bag in their hands while their other stuff was being carried by porters would be their targets. They would assume that the bag the passenger is carrying in their hand contains valuable items and would ensure that they lay their hands on the bag," said the other officer.
By the time the victim realised the situation and shouted for help, the auto driver would have escaped.
"A team received an input that the members of the gang operating in Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, would be coming to the bus stop near the railway station. This information was shared with senior officers and a team led by DCP Rajesh Deo nabbed three persons. They led police to their gang leader Parmod and other associate Rajan who were also apprehended," said Yadav.
On sustained interrogation, Pramod revealed that he used to sell jewellery articles to one Kuldeep Soni and the jewellery articles in the incident where they had robbed a woman were also sold to him for Rs 2.5 lakh.
"Kuldeep Soni was also apprehended, who on interrogation stated that he melted all the jewellery articles and sold it to someone," said Yadav.
