In a setback to Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde in Beed, her home district, six Zilla Parishad members of the NCP who had voted for the BJP in the election to chairman's post have been disqualified.
In the Beed ZP election earlier this year, candidates of other parties won more seats collectively than the BJP.
However, six ZP members from the NCP voted for the BJP candidate in the election for ZP chairperson, ensuring that the post went to the saffron party.
The NCP had lodged a complaint against its members, and following a scrutiny of the complaint, district collector M D Singh disqualified all six of them, said an official in the collector's office today.
All the six members have been asked to return their election certificates to the collector's office, he said.
The development is a setback for BJP leader Pankaja Munde, who is facing a tough competition from her estranged cousin and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, in her home district.
