Mexican authorities have found the bodies of six people in a mass grave next to a burning car with another corpse on the outskirts of Acapulco.

The Guerrero state prosecutor's office said five men and one woman were inside the pit found today in a field of lime trees in the village of El Salto, which is part of the Pacific resort's municipality.

A police official who requested anonymity said the victims appeared to have been shot dead days ago.

Acapulco has been plagued by drug-related violence in recent years, with one of the highest murder rates in the country.

More than 77,000 people have been killed in drug cartel-related violence in Mexico since 2006.
