Six persons died and several others fell ill after drinking spurious liquor brought from a shop at Tarapith here, police said today.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police C Sudhakar said the men were members of two groups from Mahula and Kutubpur villages in Rampurhat, who had gone to cremate two bodies at a crematorium in Tarapith on Monday night.
After the cremation the men purchased and consumed bottled liquor from a shop adjacent to Kali temple of Tarapith.

Many of them fell ill the next day and four men died at the Rampurhat hospital, where they were rushed for medical aid. One of them died in the morning and three last night.
Two others died at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Sudhakar said.
Three persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, the police superintendent said.
"We have started investigation to find if others were involved in the trading of illicit liquor. Some bottles of liquor were seized from the shop," he added.
