Six fishermen injured in mid-sea attack by unidentified gang

Six fishermen of a hamlet in the district sustained injuries in a mid-sea attack by unidentified persons off Kodiakarai coast, a fisheries department official said today.

The fishermen of Vellapallam area ventured into the sea on yesterday in two fibre glass boats and were fishing south east of Kodiakarai coast last night when a gang of six unidentified persons in two boats surrounded the fishermen, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Sivakumar said.

They jumped into the boats, attacked the fishermen with sickles and stones, snatched the fish catch and fled the scene. All the six fishermen sustained injuries, he said.

Other fishermen fishing in the vicinity brought the injured to the shore this morning.
 

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister K A Jayapal visited the three severely injured fishermen who were admitted at the General Hospital here, he said.
