Six gangsters arrested in Phagwara

Six gangsters, wanted in several cases, were arrested today and arms and ammunition seized from them, police said.

The six accused, allegedly involved in gang-wars, are facing charges of murder, attempt to murder, looting, snatching, uploading videos of victims of their barbaric assault and drug peddling, said Assistant Inspector General, Special Task Force-cum-in-charge, Doaba region Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh and Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team, headed by Inspector Inderjit Singh, spotted the accused at Fatehgarh Gate village and Ghuman T-point near here this morning.

On seeing the policemen, the gangsters opened fire at them, police said.
 

The police too fired back and succeeded in overpowering the gangsters, they added.

During the 15-minute operation, the accused fired 8-10 rounds and the police too fired as many rounds. However, no one was injured in the firing, police said.

One double-barrel gun, eight live cartridges, two empty cartridges, five pistols, including a .32 bore, country-made pistols, sharp-edged weapons and 1.3 kg of heroin were seized from the accused, police said.

A four-wheeler in which the accused had come to commit crime in the area too was impounded, they added.

The gang used to operate in Kapurthala, SBS Nagar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur districts, police said, adding that the accused had links with other gangs and jailed criminals.
