Six persons have been arrested in connection with suspected 'moral policing' incident at Ullal near here in which a student from Mangalore University was dragged out of a bus and assaulted for being in the company of girls from another community, police said.

Five students of the economics department had gone to Ullal on October six as there were no classes in the forenoon. A group chased them and allegedly caught hold of a student and assaulted him after taking him in an auto rickshaw.

The victim had filed a complaint at the Konaje police station about the incident. In the complaint, the student said he, along with four other classmates, visited Ullal beach. Two students belonged to one faith and three others were from a different community.

The six-member group followed them and seeing this, they boarded a bus back to the university. While others managed to escape, the student was caught and assaulted.

Sripathi Kalluraya, Chairman, Department of Economics, Mangalore University, said it was a matter of concern that some elements were not tolerating free movement of students and were taking law into their own hands.
