Six held for smuggling gold worth Rs 2.85 cr at airport

Six persons, including two foreigners, have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valued at Rs 2.85 crore at the international airport here.

The passengers, who included three women, were intercepted by customs officials on their arrival here on Wednesday. They had arrived in different flights from Dubai, Armenia and Azerbaijan, customs officials said today.

All of them were allegedly found to be carrying gold weighing 10.7 kgs. The gold was seized and the passengers were arrested. The value of the seized gold is assessed to be Rs 2.85 crore, they said.

Customs officials said that smugglers are adopting to new modus operandi for smuggling gold by using women as carriers. In this case also, the women were allegedly carrying gold with them, they said adding that further investigation in the matter was going on.
