Six inmates of the central prison here were today hospitalised after their condition deteriorated when they went on a fast protesting their arrest, police said.
The inmates, belonging to a farmers' association, which is striving to lift the ban on toddy, were arrested yesterday after they were found consuming and selling toddy to villagers near Sulur, police said.
They were produced before a court which remanded them to judicial custody and they were lodged in the prison here, they said.

They refused to take food since yesterday afternoon, resulting in health problems, police said.
Considering their deteriorating condition, the six were taken to the Government Hospital here, where they are undergoing treatment in the prisoners ward, police said.
