Six-member gang held for extortion attempt

: A gang of six people including a woman were arrested today for on charges of posing as Anti-Corruption Bureau officials and attempting to extort Rs 4 lakh from a woman Regional Transport Authority (RTA) official here, police said.

On June 30, Mohammed Aleem Saber and the other accused associated with a local NGO and some local web channels went to the RTA office where the woman is working as a junior assistant and threatened her saying they had a video showing her accepting bribe.

They demanded Rs 4 lakh from her, failing which they threatened to post the video on social network sites, a police release said.

 

"Though, the accused did not have any such video they hatched a plan and tried to extort money from her," it said.
