Six policemen, including two Sub Inspectors, have been suspended for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh for shielding a group of illegal traders of animals in Rampur District of Uttar Pradesh.

Sub Inspectors - Ranveer Singh Malik and Jitendra Singh Dhama - and four constables were suspended yesterday on the orders of SP Sadhna Goswami.

The suspension came after the Circle Officer (CO) of the area carried out an investigation on the orders of the SP and submitted a report on the allegations against the policemen.

The report said the policemen intercepted a Tata pickup truck carrying half-a-dozen prohibited animals with a group of persons on February 12 in Swar Tehsil of Rampur District.

They nabbed two persons while others managed to flee. The duo were taken to a constable's residence where a deal was finalised, the SP said.

Under the deal, the police personnel freed the culprits after allegedly accepting the bribe of Rs one lakh, Goswami said.

The policemen also arrested an innocent person to shield the real culprits, the SP said. The person was later released.

Police later arrested seven real culprits allegedly involved in the illegal trade of animals.
