Six prisoners escaped from the Daman Fort Jail here early this morning by using bedsheets to scale a 25-feet high wall, police said.

Those who managed to escape are Janak Devipujak, Salim Siddique, Vishal Thakur, Vasudev Girdhardas, Rakesh Rajput and Umesh Sonavane. They were behind bars for petty crimes, including thefts.

A manhunt is on to nab them, officials said, adding many questions have been raised about how they managed to come out of their barracks in which they were locked or how nobody could notice them when they scaled the high wall.

Action would be taken against jail officials after an inquiry, officials said.
