Six run over by jeep in Amritsar

Four children were among six persons who were killed, while eight others injured today after a jeep rammed into some roadside vendors in Jandiala town here, police said.

The driver was allegedly drunk due to which he lost control over the vehicle and hit the vendors, they said.

Among the four dead children, two were brothers, police said.

The deceased were identified as Palwinder Singh his brother Mota, Joban and Gopi, all between the age group of 11 to 13 years, while the remaining two have not been identified yet, they said.

After crushing six people to death, the driver rammed the jeep into a nearby house breaking a wall. Police have seized country made liquor from vehicle and booked the driver identified as Harbhajan Singh under relevant sections of the IPC.
 

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh condoled the death of four children and two others in the mishap, an official spokesman said here.

Singh expressed shock and grief at the loss of lives, and directed the district police and administration officials to get a thorough investigation done into the incident.

He also expressed concern over the frequent road accidents caused by over-speeding vehicles and asked the transport department and traffic police officials to ensure that the new draft transport policy, currently in process of formulation, provides concrete measures to check over- speeding.

The chief minister said the reign of terror unleashed on the roads by over-speeding vehicles needs to be checked to prevent the loss of innocent lives.
