The ruling National Conference today said tackling the issue of unemployment and unemployability had been the priority of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah since he assumed office in 2009, leading to formulation of the Sher-e Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for the Youth.

"Tackling the issue of unemployment and unemployability has remained focused priority of the Chief Minister since he took over the reins in 2009, which resulted in formulation of the Sher-e Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for the Youth (SKEWPY)," NC provincial president Devender Singh Rana said today.

Rana today inaugurated Trimurti Briquettes, a private sector industrial unit set up under SKEWPY, at the Industrial Growth Centre, Phase II at Mandhera village in Samba district.

"This innovative programme has brought cheer in the gloomy lives of educated unemployed who have not only become successful entrepreneurs but employers as well," he said.

Elaborating on the scheme, he said SKEWPY envisages motivation and training of educated youths to take up entrepreneurship as a career option and generate employment opportunities not only for themselves, but also for others.

He lauded the role being played by Jammu and Kashmir Bank and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute in making this programme a success.

He referred to various other programmes like Himayat and Udaan that have been put in place to assist youths in getting jobs in corporate sector across the country.

Rana said empowerment of youth has been the core of the NC agenda and the present dispensation is pursuing it with a sense of commitment.

He asked the youth to benefit from these programmes and play there useful role in enhancing productivity and providing much needed jobs to the skilled and unskilled workforce.

The NC leader asked the youth to aim high and excel in their chosen fields, and cautioned them against exploitative machinations of some vested interests.
