A group of Sri Lankan refugees today sought the help of the district administration to protect them from alleged harassment and extortion from rowdies near their camp in Anaiyur in this district.

In a representation to the Collector, the refugees said they were all working as coolies for more than 25 years. Some rowdies were threatening them and extorting money from them frequently. Their womenfolk were also being teased and harassed, they said.

Three incidents of violence had occurred in the last seven months and many refugees had been injured in the attacks by these rowdies, they said, adding that police had not taken any action, despite repeated complaints.

Collector L Subramanian who received their complaint, assured them that action would be taken against the rowdies.
