Villagers of Bhagwanpura, about 40 km from here, protested against non-construction of a rail under-bridge near their village yesterday, they said.

After the protest ended the villagers dispersed, but later railway officials found five concrete sleepers under the newly laid railway track missing. Besides, 72 angular clips and slide liners and 10 rubber pads were found either missing or damaged, they said.

Police has registered a case against unknown persons under various sections of the IPC including 379 (theft) and 427 (damage) on the complaint of Senior Section Engineer (SSE) Dharmender Kumar, police said.

Villagers were protesting against construction of the rail under-bridge at some distance from the village and not near it.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Khanna, Jitendar Aulakh told reporters that no arrest has been made so far. Efforts were on to identify the miscreants, he said.

The railways in the meanwhile undertook repairs on a war footing following which an engine from Mohali side undertook a trial run on the repaired section.
