Small area in 5 schools to be used for vegetable cultivation

: Under a novel scheme in the district, a small area in five schools will be used to promote vegetable cultivation and also health of students by giving them nutritious vegetables.

Chief Education Officer S Santhi and farm expert Manimekalai of the agricultural science institute at vamban, said the scheme would also help create awareness among the students about the nutrition rich vegetables.

"Our goal is to eradicate micro nutrient deficiency among the students" they said.

The first vegetable plot would come up at Alangudi government boys higher seconday school on a five cent site.

"We plan to raise brinjal, chilli, green gourd. The others schools where vegetables would be raise are in Pudukottai, Keeramangalam and kothamangalam. The farm produce would be used for the noon meal scheme, they said.
