Press Trust of India Shimla
The Shimla Municipal Corporation today rejected the proposal of the state government to impose property tax on unit basis and urged the government to suitably amend the Act.

The general house of SMC which met here today unanimously passed a one-line resolution, outrightly rejecting the proposal to impose unit-based property tax in the Corporation area.

The proposal had invited criticism and the SMC had held an open house to invite the objections from the public in which most of the speakers opposed the proposal and described as "unrealistic, impractical and discriminatory".

The new provision proposed division of Corporation area into different zones and imposition of tax on all houses, including self-occupied houses.

Earlier, self-occupied houses were exempted from property tax, but that exemption has been withdrawn and house owners in the old town rue that the rent received by them is meagre and the amount of tax would be much more under the new system.
